Causes and Treating Itch in Psoriasis


Itching – is a sensation that causes the desire or reflex to scratch. These feelings are concentrating in one location or spread all over the body.

The itch of psoriasis

It was previously thought that psoriasis is not itching because of not all patients complain of itching. But medics scientifically proved that 80% of patients with psoriasis suffer from itching. And Itching varies in severity.

Scratching leads to nerve endings hypertrophy. Because of it your skin becomes more exposed. Scratching also traumatizes the skin and plaque psoriasis appears at that places (Koebner phenomenon).

Causes of psoriasis patients itching

  1. Unassisted using of topical irritant
  2. Attaching a secondary infection
  3. Other endocrine disorder
  4. Most cases of itching are psychological in origin
  5. Eating some foodstuffs
  6. Using household chemicals
  7. Unhealthy working environment
  8. Itching intensifies by wearing warm (especially wool) clothing
  9. Sometimes itching appear after galvanization or electrophoresis

Doctors recommend to wear clothes made from natural fabrics to psoriasis patients and refuse to take hot bath or shower. You must to avoid contact with detergents and use rubber gloves. Don’t forget to pare your fingernails in order not to hurt your skin. Try to avoid caffeinated and alcoholic drinks that can rob your body and skin of moisture

There are some tips how to soften skin:

  • rub in moisturizing lotion several times a day

  • ultrasound, X-ray teletherapy, Bucky rays, cryotherapy, magnetotherapy
  • after bathing always use baby crème, and your skin will be softer

Medicinal agents

Bromide, calcium, sodium thiosulfate, vitamins are making itching easier. Every evening before bed to take an injection of 0,5% aminazinum solution. Also you can try 5-10% solution of validolum for external use.

Natural remedies for psoriasis itchy

Folk medicine is used plants that give antipruritic action – elecampane, nettle, ephedra, dill etc.

Fennel seed infusion: 2 teaspoon of seeds infuse per 1 glass of boiling water, let steep at least 20 minutes and filter it. You should take 1/3 cup of infusion thrice in a day during 2 days. You can eat some ground seeds or take lump of sugar with 10-15 drops dill oil on it.

It would be good take nettle, peppermint, lemon balm decoctions or infusions.   To prepare it you should take 1-2 tablespoon of medicative herb per 1 glass of boiled water (daily dose).

You should use burdock root as an infusion (1 tablespoon of ground roots per half a liter of water. Mixture boils for 10 minutes). The dose of infusion is half a cup 4 times a day.

You should use valerian tincture or thyme as an antipruritic and sedative remedy. Use 1 tablespoon of herbs per cup of boil water. Take this infusion 3 times a day.

Folk medicine for external use

Sore point with itching you should to rub in almond oil or lemon balm. If you suffer from an itchy scalp, you should rub alcoholate nettle with your fingertips. The fresh leaves of nettles thoroughly washed, the last time – with boiled water and soda – are ground, mixed with a tenfold quantity of alcohol (vodka), and insist for two weeks in tightly sealed vial.

Help for genital itch

In this case you should use oak bark decoction with glycerin: 100 gram oak bark for twenty minutes to boil a 100 ml of water, and then add 100 g of glycerin.

Anal itching is treated with tar ointment. Prepare 5 g birch tar, 20 g of lanolin, 5 g of zinc oxide and 70 g of Vaseline. All the components must be mixed. This ointment temporarily relieves pain, burning, and itching by numbing the nerve endings.

Baths for psoriasis patients

Baths are another easy way to help care for your skin when you have psoriasis. You should take immersion bath with starch, siftings, pine extract and baths jelly. Some patients recommend to add oak bark to bath water (0,5 – 1 kg of bark for 4 liters of water).
